Morning

Meet in Newcastle and hop aboard as we set off for Walka Water Works , Maitland, about 40 minutes drive from Newcastle CBD.

We’ll spend the morning here photographing a large variety of water and bush birds. During this amazing bird day you may see some of the following that bare regularly found in the area. Australasian Grebe, Hoary-headed Grebe and Great Crested Grebe.

Purple Swamphen, Dusky Moorehen and Eurasian Coot, Egrets, cormorants, ibis, assorted ducks. Bush birds include Eastern Yellow Robin, Bar-shouldered Dove, Yellow, Yellow-rumped and Brown Thornbills, Scarlet Honeyeater, Eastern Spinebill, Lewins and Yellow-faced Honeyeaters, Red-browed Finches, Little Corellas, Galahs, Eastern and Crimson Rosella, Grey and Pied Butcherbirds. Whew, plenty to keep us busy.

You learn the best techniques for photographing birds as they forage for bugs and insects.

Afternoon

After lunch we head to Blackbutt Reserve. New Lambton . Here we’ll wander through the natural bushland as well as some very easy targets in the walk through aviary.
The surrounding forest at Blackbutt does have a resident pair of Powerful Owl and Pacific Baza. We’ll be researching prior and if we can find out their current roosting sites we try and track them down.

Kangaroo and Emu are also abundant here and you’ll find a few peacocks wandering around also.
